Emma,

As a transplant, I am still completely enraged by the knee-jerk statements people are willing to make about the South that they would not make about any other region of the country. I think about all the things I've found out since I've moved here, about Jewish families in Mobile before the Civil War and textile factories in eastern Alabama and western Georgia. Someone could write a whole novel about the military officer who fell in love with Zelda Fitzgerald and crashed a plane on her front yard, killing himself. My friends who couldn't *imagine* doing a national job search lose out when they don't find out about these histories. (And I would be saying this even if I hadn't met my husband and baby daddy here.)

One thing people are willing to say about other regions: "People learn to fly through it. And then they go home." I'm from another fly-over region, the Midwest. When I was younger and sillier, I would tell people I was from Chicago. I'm not from Chicago. I'm from a flat, soybean- and cardinal-studded landscape. Thank God for David Foster Wallace, the poet of central Illinois.

So, long story short, thanks for writing this.

I get Risky Business, Wideman's Homewood Trilogy, Striking Distance, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys (Chabon did his grad work at Pitt), and now The Perks of Being a Wallflower (which I'm watching for the first time as I type this - although the Hollywood Theater was only a couple blocks from my house, it wasn't where they did the midnight shows of the Rocky Horror Picture Show; that was at the King's Court in Oakland - we know that code, which a movie-going audience doesn't). It still amazes me that my girls will think of Georgia as their home, as the place they're from. I tell them that each place has its own baggage; a southern accent and a Pittsburgh accent connote different things, but you still end up being judged by it.

Phew, my blood pressure went up over your college interviews. I don't really have anything to add because you've said this all so well, and I haven't read Purpura, but I combat this kind of prejudice all the time in academia, so much that it actually still surprises me. It's ridiculous. Incidentally, Sean's mother cried for weeks when he said he was moving to Mississippi (from Philadelphia, PA), & I can only imagine what they expected the first time I went home with him. In fact, I think his father was genuinely surprised I was as articulate as I was. So.
It makes me sad that your favorite writer inspired this post, but I'm glad you wrote it.

Wow! This is SO good! Seriously good that I'm going to have to reread it several times. I'm in Birmingham currently, originally from MD, but here from PA. My husband had the same negative ideas about AL, but he had a job offer that I talked him into taking. I'm thankful he listened. AL is pretty great! Haven't read her 1st book so I guess I better pick up a copy. Are you still planning to use her latest book in your class?

I adore that analogy you use! I had a final project my senior year of undergrad (I needed one extra credit to graduate and a kind teacher let me do an independent study) where I made a hypertext version of "The Wasteland." It was a great project, but footnotes are such an interesting concern. I just finished Jay-Z's "Decoded" recently, and I found the number of footnotes a bit distracting. I kept virtually turning and then going back. Hmmm..You have me thinking again as well :)
